bed and breakfast, 2024 (Installation View)
The insect hotel ‘bed and breakfast’ arose from the search for a place where nature and people can live together in the city center. The compound noun “insect hotel” has been reinterpreted in this sculpture. The 28 “hotel windows” are reminiscent of a beehive due to the honeycomb structure in the cardboard, and their number symbolizes the average lifespan of a bee. The key to the overnight accommodation is embedded in the side of the hotel and reflects the classic shape of a hotel key.
The honeycombs of the 28 circular windows are empty and refer to a space that offers temporary communal shelter for a wide variety of people and disciplines. The materials used represent the basic idea of an insect hotel: the connection between nature and people. Only organic materials such as cardboard, wood, and biodegradable and compostable bioplastics were used.
